When Concord Records fused classic vocal tracks by the late Ray Charles to lush and full-bodied arrangements by the equally stellar Count Basie Orchestra, the resulting recording – Ray Sings, Basie Swings, released in 2006 – was not only a triumph of recording technology, but also one of the most celebrated albums of the year.

Now, Telarc engineer Michael Bishop takes this engineering marvel a quantum leap further by remixing Concord’s original 2-channel recording for SACD. “To create a successful 5.1 Surround mix, I wanted to bring Ray’s vocal closer to the listener, often mixing the vocal into all five main channels,” says Bishop. “I was able to keep the magic of the CD while bringing the performances out into Surround for an even more involving Ray Charles/Basie Orchestra listening experience.” Gregg Field, producer of the original recording, sums it up best: “I know Ray has never been heard like this on record before. This stands as the closest thing to being able to hear him live again.”
