Not until Beethoven was nearly thirty did he feel ready to compose for the string quartet. In his first set of quartets, published as Opus 18, he showed that he had thoroughly absorbed and understood the compositional accomplishments of Mozart and Haydn in this genre. The conversational independence of the four instruments and the lyricism, drama, wit and suspense contained in these quartets make these pieces among Beethoven's most extraordinary works.
In this cycle of Beethoven quartets, the Cleveland Quartet offers performances that are a culmination of twenty-five years of refined, world-renown ensemble playing.
