In the 1950s it was unusual for jazz pianists to record entire albums of unaccompanied performances. That was particularly true of the young modernists who had come to depend on the string bass to supply many of the rhythmic and harmonic functions needed for strength and effectiveness of the left hand in solo playing. André Previn had the imagination, drive, and technical ability to bring off decidedly two-handed performances. As he had done for the music of Vernon Duke (OJCCD-1769-2), in 1959 Previn applied his skills to songs by Jerome Kern and came up with some of the most spirited and whimsical solo work of his career.
