Opposites seldom attract as successfully as did Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Throughout their long musical partnership, Terry’s raw, backwoods hollers and harmonica whoops provided a perfect foil for McGhee’s more polished, decidedly urbane vocal and guitar approach. If their personalities sometimes clashed offstage, the two men were consummate performers on, as demonstrated in this 1962 recording at a Philadelphia coffeehouse. The material ranges from the hell-hounded pathos of Terry’s “Sick Man” to the thinly veiled sexuality of McGhee’s “Wholesale Dealin’ Papa”--all of it blues of the first order.
