Album Notes

One of Afro-Latin music's earliest, most energetic, and certainly most brilliant ambassadors, John Birks Gillespie (1917-1993) was in fine form when Bahiana (the title presumably honors both the Brazilian state of Bahia and Dizzy's Baha'i faith) was recorded in 1975. From patented bursting-at-the seams double-time flights to steam-heated passages with a mute in his celebrated upturned horn, Dizzy clearly draws nourishment from the set's Brazilian-flavored repertoire (and especially from the Brazilian percussionist Paulinho Da Costa). Like the trumpeter's personality, Bahiana is as sunny and warm as an early morning in Brazil.
