With the release of Both Sides of the Coin, Concord Records is pleased to present both sides of the artistry of vibraphonist Cal Tjader—the Latin jazz pioneer and the rarely-recorded, straight-ahead jazz artist— in one specially priced package. “Heads” is the 1980 Latin jazz recording, Gozame! Pero Ya…, which features Tjader’s signature West Coast Latin jazz sound, and the talents of Poncho Sanchez (congas & percussion), Mark Levine (piano & Fender Rhodes), Roger Glenn (flute & percussion), Rob Fisher (bass), Vince Lateano (drums), and Mundell Lowe (guitar). “Tails” is the more mainstream 1981 jazz recording, The Shining Sea, which showcases Tjader’s lyrical and melodic jazz vibraphone artistry—with empathetic support from Hank Jones (piano), Scott Hamilton (tenor saxophone), Vince Lateano (drums), and Dean Reilly (bass)—on a collection of Johnny Mandel standards.
