The Best Of Art Pepper
Art Pepper
Art Pepper's sound and conception may have evolved between his superb Contemporary recordings of the late Fifties and his miraculous comeback sessions on Galaxy two decades later, but the honesty and naked emotion of his music were never less than absolute. This collection proves the point with music from both of Pepper's classic periods, and touches on his skills as a multi-instrumentalist while keeping the focus firmly on his signature horn, the alto sax. The Contemporary tracks feature music made with two different Miles Davis rhythm sections and a stunning big band led by Marty Paich, while highlights of Pepper's Galaxy years include two titles where he fulfilled a lifelong ambition and recorded with a string orchestra.
with Jimmy Bond, Frank Butler, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, Stanley Cowell, Bob Enevoldsen, Russ Freeman, Red Garland, Roy Haynes, Pete Jolly, Philly Joe Jones, Richie Kamuca, Wynton Kelly, Cecil McBee, Dick Nash, Al Porcino, Jack Sheldon, and others
