In 1977 - at a time when most young jazz musicians were busy trying to emulate John Coltrane's "sheets of sound" or Miles Davis's fusion experiments - tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton emerged with his debut Concord Jazz release, A Good Wind Who Is Blowing Us No Ill, launching the revival of swinging, mainstream jazz. Predating Wynton Marsalis's first record by a few years - and the emergence of the many so-called "Young Lions" that would follow suit - Hamilton brought back into vogue the swinging phrasing, warm sound, and melodic improvisation of what had been previously thought to be a bygone era. While echoing the influences of swing-era masters such as Ben Webster, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins, as a young man in his early twenties, Scott Hamilton had already distilled these appealing essences through his own original voice.
