The name Byrd and the word Brazil are practically synonymous. After all, it was guitarist Charlie Byrd who first brought Brazil's mesmerizing, breezy fusion of jazz and Brazilian music to North American audiences, launching the bossa nova craze in the U.S. in the early '60s. Nearly two decades later, when these two Byrd bossa nova classics were recorded Sugarloaf Suite and Brazilville, the bossa nova continued to be a fertile vehicle of expression and exploration for Charlie Byrd, as evidenced by the boundless artistry and imagination on display in these timeless recordings. Charlie Byrd, guitar; with collective personnel: Joe Byrd, bass; Wayne Phillips, drums; Charles Redd, drums; Bud Shank, alto saxophone.
