When Red Garland and Paul Chambers teamed in the Red Garland Trio, their favorite drummer was Art Taylor, who joins them here for an exemplary set. (In the Miles Davis Quintet, the pianist and bassist were usually heard with Philly Joe Jones, although Taylor played with Davis as well). While these three men worked as a trio primarily on recordings, the extended length of the four performances here create the ambience of a live set. The mix of the title blues ballad, a brightly swinging pop tune, a riff-based original, and a grooving blues capture the several strengths of the players, whose recorded legacy is one of the most influential among piano trios to this day, in terms of both specific techniques (such as Garland's famous block chords) and the intelligent arrangements that ensured spirit and variety.

with Paul Chambers, Arthur Taylor
