Roy Haynes, one of the most important yet still underrated drummers in jazz history, did not begin to receive even a portion of the credit due his polyrhythmic style until he began leading bands in the early Sixties like the quartet heard on this album. Not only did his role at the head of a band focus attention on Haynes's complex and responsive percussion work, it also displayed his knack for pacing, contrast, and putting together dynamite personnel. Booker Ervin and Ronnie Mathews contributed material as well as strong solos, and there is also a touching version of Randy Weston's "Sketch of Melba." This quartet set the style for the "Hip Ensemble" that Haynes continues to lead to this day.
