In 1959, between his stay with Miles Davis and the establishment of his own trio, Bill Evans recorded with Lee Konitz and did some club dates (along with future Evans Trio drummer Paul Motian) with Konitz and Warne Marsh. It took nearly two decades to reunite the pianist with the great saxophonists, who approached these 1977 sessions with the spirit and spontaneity that were (and, in Konitz's case, remain) their trademark. Each horn gets a ballad feature on this energetic set, which includes several tune choices that deviate from the usual Marsh-Konitz norm; and the Evans trio responds with lucid yet prodding support. Diehard individuals meet here and, without sacrificing their own personalities, create a unified statement.
with Eddie Gomez, Eliot Zigmund
