Guitarist Jim Hall, a unique jazzmaster who has thrilled fans and enkindled students of the instrument throughout his fifty-plus year career, honors his inspirators in a solo setting for his Telarc debut. He overdubs additional guitar parts and some subtle effects. Hall is a warmly personal player who takes in everything around him and brings it into his music. Within the 13 selections of Dedications & Inspirations, Hall pays tribute to art, poetry, people, scenes, and music that have been part of his spiritual explorations throughout his life.
Hall was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was performing in small groups by age thirteen. Hall studied with guitarist Fred Sharp and pursued classical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Moving to the West Coast in 1955, the guitarist began to attract national attention as a member of the original Chico Hamilton Quintet. Three years later Hall headed for New York where he joined saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre's trio. The past three decades have included collaborations with the late pianist Bill Evans, saxophonists Paul Desmond and Sonny Rollins, and trumpeter Art Farmer, as well as a trip to Brazil that inspired some of the tunes on Dedications & Inspirations. Hall continues to compose, record, perform, teach, and tour internationally.
