A night at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Pablo recording artists in the spotlight is recreated on this anthology featuring three of the label's most prolific stars. Each mini-set contains crowd-pleasing big moments that have real impact on the huge canvas of Montreux, while there are also more intimate and subtle passages. Count Basie's 1979 Orchestra, with the leader at the helm and no-Countin' with Ella Fitzgerald, packs the patented power; and guitarist Joe Pass lights his own fireworks, alone and with bass wizard Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. In a set where Pass plays Basie and Basie plays Berigan, Ella Fitzgerald taking off from Jacquet's tenor solo on "Flying Home" and then touching down via Illinois again is a particularly choice moment.
