Cal Tjader’s band in the 1950s and ’60s was a crossroads where immigrants from various Latin American countries, U.S.-born Latinos, and sympathetic American jazzmen met and shared music and ideas. This pairing of two Fantasy LPs makes the point by presenting six separate Tjader groups, several of which recorded in live performance. There are notable solo turns by Paul Horn, José “Chombo” Silva (who blows brilliantly on “A Night in Tunisia”), Vince Guaraldi, and the underrated Lonnie Hewitt: but the backbone of all six sessions are percussionists Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria, who first teamed with the vibist in George Shearing’s quintet. Four tracks also feature the piano and big band arrangements of Eddie Cano.

with Lonnie Hewitt, José Lozano, Victor Venegas, Eddie Cano, Al McKibbon, Modesto Briseno, Tony Terran, Paul Horn, Eddie Coleman, Rolando Lozano, José "Chombo" Silva, Vince Guaraldi
