Don Friedman made it clear early in his career that despite harmonic similarities to Bill Evans, his conception was his own. The stunning "Ochre" and "Flashback" in this 1963 album were the clearest examples to date of Friedman’s personal use of harmony, meter, and freedom. Indeed, more than three decades after they were recorded, Friedman’s dash and daring in these pieces make them still sound like guideposts to the future. His other aspect--the lyrical, reflective side--is equally durable in pieces like his own "Ballade in C-Sharp Minor" and Irving Berlin’s "How Deep Is the Ocean?" As for his hard-core bebop credentials, he validates them handsomely in "News Blues" and "Alone Together." His solos on those pieces are examples of the kind of playing that inspire a distinguished mainstream leader like Clark Terry to retain Friedman as his pianist of preference.
