In 1970, at age 52, Rufus Thomas made a remarkable career comeback with his self-penned "Do the Funky Chicken," a #5 r&b chart hit that combined the Mississippi-born entertainer's roots in vaudeville and the blues with the smoldering funk of the Bar-Kays' rhythm section, augmented by son Marvell Thomas on keyboards. Besides the title track, the album's highlights include an updated version of "Bear Cat" (Thomas's 1953 hit answer to Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog") and his unique treatment of "Sixty Minute Man," a Billy Ward doo-wop classic that Thomas transforms into a mesmerizing tour de force of voodoo funk, complete with a Tarzan movie-inspired chant and some wondrous Dizzy Gillespie-like scat singing. Also contained on this reissue of the original LP are the A and B sides of four rare Thomas singles.
