The legendary, multi-Grammy® Award-winning vibraphonist presents an exciting new discovery.
A “four-mallet phenomenon” and “ultra-virtuoso with highly sophisticated harmonic sense” (JazzTimes magazine), Gary Burton is the quintessential modern jazz vibraphonist. Also known throughout his career for discovering phenomenal young musicians—including such jazz guitar notables as Larry Coryell, John Scofield, Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel—Burton presents an exciting new discovery on Generations in the prodigious talents of wunderkind jazz guitarist and composer, Julian Lage. Merely a high school sophomore at the time these sessions were recorded, Lage’s musical maturity, virtuosity and creativity belie his youthful years. Along with the dynamic trio of pianist Makoto Ozone (also a Burton discovery), bassist James Genus, and drummer Clarence Penn, Burton and Lage deliver intricate-yet-accessible performances of a colorful spectrum of compositions—from inspired, far-reaching new compositions by both Lage and Ozone, to timeless works by Burton’s contemporaries Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow and Carla Bley.
