Following the success of Shelly Manne’s 1956 My Fair Lady (OJC-336), it was apparent that there was a large audience eager for jazz versions of Broadway and Hollywood musicals. André Previn, the pianist on Manne’s hit, employed the drummer for Previn’s own best-seller, Pal Joey. That was followed by Previn and His Pals doing the effervescent music from Gigi. The songs of Lerner and Loewe had transformed Colette’s famous story into a shimmering musical for the screen, with André Previn as its musical director. During the height of the movie’s success in 1958, Previn and Manne, with Red Mitchell on bass, went into the studio and in turn made the songs into sparkling jazz vehicles.
