Gone With Golson
Benny Golson
The big-toned tenor saxophonist and gifted composer/arranger Benny Golson cut this album several months before forming the celebrated Jazztet with Art Farmer. Barbara Gardner commented in her Down Beat review that "the evidence of growth and development in [Golson's] playing reveals an increasingly expanding tenor man. The boldness and intrepidity with which he begins his attack and manipulates his horn is in direct contrast with the gentleness and suavity of his charts." Also making the session crackle were trombonist Curtis Fuller (a member of the original Jazztet), pianist Ray Bryant, brother Tom Bryant on bass, and drummer Al Harewood. Added to this reissue is "A Bit of Heaven," a Fuller composition from the same session that was previously available only on a Prestige twofer.
