Contrary to what some writers continue to perpetuate, all West Coast jazz of the 1950s was not merely cool, nor was it bloodless. Not when you had drummers such as Shelly Manne, Max Roach, and Stan Levey propelling the rhythm along with Lighthousekeeper-bassist Howard Rumsey; and such instrumentalists as Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper, and Frank Rosolino to play charts by Rogers, Giuffre, Cooper, and Bill Holman. Seen in perspective, these performances by California jazzmen seem to sound better with the passing of each year, and are a tribute to the Lighthouse.
with Milt Bernhart, Bob Cooper, Rolf Ericson, Jimmy Giuffre, Stan Levey, Shelly Manne, Frank Patchen, Max Roach, Shorty Rogers, Frank Rosolino, Bud Shank, Claude Williamson, Herb Geller, Carlos Vidal, Jack Costanza
