Edward "Sonny" Stitt was one of the most formidable saxophonists of his generation--and one of the most frequently recorded. The Boston-born alto and tenor master appeared in many different musical contexts, but these two long-unavailable albums from 1971 are perhaps the most unusual in his extensive discography. They're back-to-the-blues affairs in which Stitt's frequently double-timed, always urgent bebop lines rip with blistering authority over the riveting funk of organist Leon Spencer, guitarist Melvin Sparks, and drummer Idris Muhammad. These are Sonny Stitt's essential acid-jazz recordings.
with Virgil Jones, Leon Spencer, Don Patterson, Melvin Sparks, Idris Muhammad
