Richard "Groove" Holmes cooks like crazy on the 1968 dates collected here. The Groover! is a trio session distinguished by a riproaring "Speak Low," a lovely "Blue Moon," and a warm, humorous reading of "Just Friends" (with guitarist Billy Jackson contributing a deft R&B sensibility). That Healin' Feelin' is at least as flashy and perhaps more interesting: the guitarist is the under-recorded Philadelphian Billy Butler, an economical player with an original harmonic sense. The tunes span a leisurely "See See Rider," the vivid "Irene Court," and a relaxed "Laura," featuring luminous Butler guitar and a knockout alto solo by bluesy Columbus saxman Rusty Bryant. This solid mainstream collection never fails to swing. It highlights a singular musician, an organist who actually began on organ, in unusually sympathetic company.

with George Freeman, Earl Maddox, Billy Jackson, Rusty Bryant, Billy Butler, Herbie Lovelle
