The late John Fahey is simply one of the greatest steel guitarists of the 20th century. As a composer, musicologist, and performer he had few peers. Fahey almost singlehandedly created a new style and genre of acoustic music for solo guitar, in which 1920s and 1930s blues traditions collided with post–World War II classical music. In 1980 the brilliant and eccentric guitarist traveled to the southern hemisphere and recorded the only official live album in his extensive discography. Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, and the water spiraling anti-clockwise down the drain inspire Fahey into an unusually intense performance of “The Approaching of the Disco Void.” There is also a special warmth and complexity heard here as the music spins out into the space of a larger Tasmanian hall. New liner notes by Sonic Youth’s Jim O’Rourke illuminate the relations between Fahey’s music and his eccentric approach to life and touring. This is classic-era John Fahey at his best.
