At The Five Spot [2-fer]
Thelonious Monk
The quartet has always seemed to be Thelonious’s favorite musical format—it is the context he has worked in most often during his long and distinguished career. And the Five Spot was probably his favorite club—it was there he made his triumphant return to full-scale activity in the late Fifties. The combination of that club and a strong quartet makes this a notable addition to the Monk catalog.
*#1-5, 11 originally issued on Thelonious In Action (Riverside 262); #6-10 on Misterioso Riverside 279).
*Since maximum playing time of a single CD could not accommodate the entire length of the original double-LP release, “Blues Five Spot” and an alternate version of “Epistrophy (theme)” were omitted.
