Money Talks consists of tracks recorded by the Bar-Kays at Stax Records in Memphis between 1972 and '75 that were left unfinished until Fantasy Records, the new Berkeley, California home of Stax, readied them for release in 1978. By that time, the innovative Memphis funk band had become hotter than ever at Mercury Records, but Money Talks was no hasty overdub operation, but rather a carefully crafted restoration job that resulted in one of the Bar-Kays' most memorable albums. Indeed, the single "Holy Ghost" shot to No. 9 on Billboard's soul chart, higher than any of the group's 1978 Mercury releases. The song is a mind-bending slide of molten funk that remains one of the most-requested numbers at the Bar-Kays' live performances.
