Muddy Waters had the prototypical Chicago blues band of the Fifties and Sixties and, in Otis Spann, the most formidable down-home blues piano stylist of the modern era. A sideman on countless sessions during the Fifties, Spann recorded regularly under his own name throughout the next decade. This November 21, 1964 date, although issued under Spann’s name, featured the entire Muddy Waters band of the period, especially harmonica virtuoso James Cotton, who traded vocal duties with the pianist. Muddy was on hand too, listed as “Dirty Rivers” for contractual reasons.

with James Cotton, James Madison, "Dirty Rivers," Milton Rector, S.P. Leary
