New Orleans: The Living Legends - Bourbon Street
The Louis Cottrell Trio
A student of the legendary Lorenzo Tio, Jr. and Barney Bigard, and the son of one of New Orleans's most influential drummers, Louis Cottrell, Jr. (1911-1978) was a master of the Albert system clarinet favored by Creole musicians. He was a powerful presence on his hometown's music scene, president of the musicians' union and a widely-heard sideman, when he organized this trio for Riverside's "Living Legends" series; and the intimate magic he created, with a major assist from the guitar and occasional banjo of Emanuel Sayles, was so convincing on record that the band became a regular working unit. More polite and subtle than the city's "downtown" music, the Creole jazz of Cottrell and company remains an intimate, low-key delight.
with Emmanuel Sayles, McNeal Breaux, Alcide "Slow Drag" Pavageau
