This album was voted by many critics one of the best jazz recordings of 1982 and one of the best Art Pepper records ever. It was his last; Art died less than a month after it was made. "Goin' Home," an old spiritual, is about death and the soul's return to God. Musically speaking, "goin' home" is a bandstand command to return–after an interval of improvising–to the beginning of the written melody, which then becomes the closing statement of the song. In this duo date Art shows us how that's done. With his friend and favorite pianist, the great George Cables, he made these last joyful outings. He explored some fertile standard tunes, and then he brought them sweetly home.
