Two For The Road
Herb Ellis & Joe Pass
Paired guitarists run the risk of getting tangled up in each other's chords and melodic ideas. In their famous Two for the Road album, Herb Ellis and Joe Pass took that risk, and it turned out to be worth taking. Not only did these two virtuosos avoid collisions; they discovered an empathy, almost a sixth sense, that made it clear when one should solo and the other should accompany. Such awareness comes with the humility that grows out of mastery that recognizes mastery. Not to put too fine a metaphysical point on the proceedings, they also swung like crazy.
