Red Garland was an influence for both his trio and quintet work, and this album allows us to hear him in each context. The earlier session features the pianist’s favorite working trio, with bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Specs Wright, and includes a previously unissued studio version of “Satin Doll,” the tune that opened the classic Red Garland at the Prelude (Prestige 7170) live date. Completing the program, and giving Garland the opportunity to show his inspiration as a supporter of horn soloists, are three loose tracks from a quintet that marks Garland’s only encounter with the great Oliver Nelson.

with Doug Watkins, Specs Wright, Richard Williams, Oliver Nelson, Peck Morrison, Charlie Persip
