Eloquence
Bill Evans
This album surveys the more intimate side of an artist who was supremely intimate in any setting. The trio was Bill Evans's norm, yet when he sought variety he was more likely to find it in two-part conversations or solo performances than through expanding his basic personnel. We get some of each here–four duets with longtime partner Eddie Gomez, with Evans doubling on electric piano during the first two; and ruminative solo statements, some of which are performed medley-style. Among the highlights are two Coleman/Leigh tunes, "When in Rome" and "It Amazes Me," and Jobim's "Saudade do Brasil," with a melody that echoes the Evans/Miles Davis classic "Blue in Green."
