Sims didn’t record or live much longer after this 83 session from the famed SFO nightclub. Like a gre at boxer, though, he went out swinging.

With Monty Budwig/b, Frank Collett/p and Shelly Manne/dr, he not only croons his tenor through gems like “I Hear A Rhapsody” and “If You Could See Me Now” but he pulls out his underappreciated soprano for a lovely reading of Ellington’s “Tonight I Shall Sleep” and a peppy two step “Pennies From Heaven.” Listening to this makes you miss guys that played from the heart, and not from the book.

with Frank Collett, Monty Budwig, Shelly Manne

Recorded March 20, 1983.
