The Jazz Alliance is proud to present the debut of Susannah McCorkle’s “Over The Rainbow” in Compact Disc format. This is a re-release of the original 1981 LP release.
As a professional singer, Susannah had listened to and learned hundreds of songs written over the past sixty years. She valued that combination of craftsmanship and artistry that gives a popular song the power to communicate both ideas and emotions long after it is first recorded. Susannah was amused to realize that Yip Harburg was writing timeless satirical songs about materialism, racial, and social injustice long before the protest songs of the sixties.
Susannah heard E.Y. Harburg’s “Finian’s Rainbow” as a youth then rediscovering twenty years later. At this point she was as entertained and as moved as ever, but she was now able to appreciate the subtleties in writing and interpretation of the wonderful songs she had enjoyed as a child. She felt the best way to express how much the album meant to her by making an album of E.Y. Harburg songs.
This album was recorded in New York City, NY, in 1980.
