P.D.Q. Bach: Oedipus Tex & Other Choral Calamities
Peter Schickele
P.D.Q.’s first Telarc recording, P.D.Q. Bach: 1712 Overture & Other Musical Assaults won a Grammy award for Best Comedy Recording of the Year. Now Professor Peter Schickele (who is on extremely good terms with the serious composer Mr. Peter Schickele), conductor Newton Wayland (who was named for an exit on Route 128 outside of Boston), and the Greater Hoople Area Off-Season Philharmonic reach new heights of hilarity with Oedipus Tex & Other Choral Calamities.
All of the works on this disc are “new” discoveries. For example, Professor Schickele discovered the manuscript for Oedipus Tex sewn into the shirt worn by Davy Crockett at the Alamo. This work definitively proves that the Greeks pre-dated the Spaniards in the American Southwest by more than a millennium. Among its many unique qualities are the continuos accompaniment, consisting of cello and keyboard harmonica, and the solo horn part, which begins on mouthpiece alone and gradually adds pieces of tubing in successive movements.
Classical Rap, performed by Grandmaster Flab and the Hoople Funkharmonic, deals with the trials and tribulations of the denizens of New York’s Upper West Side. Two other comedic classical masterworks, the choral cantata Knock, Knock, and the Birthday Ode to ‘Big Daddy’ Bach are recorded here for the first time.
