In much the way that Art Blakey and Miles Davis are credited with being keen talent scouts for their respective bands. Brother Jack McDuff (1926-2001) had a discerning ear for guitarists. Bill Jennings, Grant Green, Pat Martino, and, most notably, George Bensen have all recorded with the organist. Kenny Burrell was already an established star when he made this music with McDuff in early 1963, and the blues-inspired chemistry between the two is like a shot and a beer. Joined by up-and-coming tenor man Harold Vick and veteran Basie-ite Eric Dixon on tenor saxophone and flute (sometimes they're heard separately, sometimes together), the late Joe Dukes, an all-out cooker, on drums, and conga drummer Ray Barretto, who enlivened many a New York jazz date. Crash! is almost 75 minutes of swinging swaggering, soulful stuff. Lead on, McDuff!

with Harold Vick, Eric Dixon, Joe Dukes, Ray Barretto
