Song titles such as "Days of Wine and Roses," "Ode to Billie Joe," "Alfie," "Hi Heel Sneakers," and "To Sir with Love" evoke the 1960s, as does Johnny "Hammond" Smith's funky, fat-toned attack on the Hammond B-3 organ. The Louisville-born, Cleveland-bred keyboardist (1933-1997) also was ahead of his time, having helped to introduce soul grooves to the jazz mainstream. The music on these 1967 and '68 sessions, both featuring the surging tenor saxophones of Houston Person and Earl Edwards, prefigures that of Smith's significant crossover successes of the Seventies--and paved the way for the acid jazz of the Nineties.

with Houston Person, Earl Edwards, Wally Richardson, Jimmy Lewis, John Harris, Richard Landrum
