Here is trumpeter/vocalist/icon Chet Baker (1929-1988) at the start of his career, and at one of the many stops along his way to becoming a tragic legendary figure. The opening tracks are among the first recorded by the Gerry Mulligan Quartet that brought Baker his initial fame, while the rest were cut several years later during Baker's brief affiliation with Riverside Records. The Riverside tracks include such stars as Pepper Adams, Bill Evans, Johnny Griffin, Herbie Mann, and Zoot Sims, yet each is indelibly stamped by the fragile lyricism that made Baker's playing and singing so haunting.

My Funny Valentine, Moonlight in Vermont, The More I See You, Old Devil Moon, Do It the Hard Way, Fair Weather, Solar, Soft Winds, If You Could See Me Now, How High the Moon, It Never Entered My Mind, September Song, Thank Heaven for Little Girls, I Talk to the Trees, On the Street Where You Live

with Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Kenny Drew, Bill Evans, Johnny Griffin, Al Haig, Chico Hamilton, Philly Joe Jones, Sam Jones, Connie Kay, Herbie Mann, Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims, and others
