In 1958, Mose Allison, a bebop piano player with old-time tendencies and roots in the Mississippi back country, was about to undergo a transformation. The nature of the change is telegraphed in the first track of Ramblin’ with Mose. He sings a Joe Liggins composition that hints of the blues and his trademark folksiness but has its feet planted on 52nd Street. It would not be long before Allison began concentrating on the singing, and particularly on the songwriting, that would make him an icon to performers in more than one genre of popular music. Here, although he functions primarily in the classic jazz piano trio format, his compositions “The Minstrels,” “Ramble,” “Saritha,” “Old Man John,” and “Ingenue” are replete with the nostalgia and sense of place that helped make Allison a favorite across a wide spectrum of music lovers, a crossover artist in the best sense. The CD includes three previously unissued bonus tracks.
