Among African-American pop music innovator Isaac Hayes's numerous distinctions is the fact that he was the first soul artist to consistently sell more albums than singles. Indeed, many of his greatest performances were simply too long to fit on seven-inch vinyl discs. Some of his album tracks were, however, were pared down to 45-RPM length to satiate the singles market. While several of the dozen 1969-74 sides on this Greatest Hit Singles collection are presented in their original short form, most come edited--including "Walk on By," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "I Stand Accused," and the chart-topping "Theme from Shaft"--just the way millions heard them on the radio and on jukeboxes at the time of their initial release.
