Singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger, producer, and sometime saxophonist Isaac Hayes revolutionized soul music, leading it away from the three-minute single into an era of symphonically orchestrated “concept” albums with extended cuts. This compact disc compiles seven shorter selections originally cut for 45 release. They include the 1974 hit “Wonderful,” a brilliantly reharmonized treatment of Hank Williams’s “I Can't Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You),” and two Sam and Dave-like duets by Hayes and David Porter. The set begins with two live performances from the 1972 Watts Summer Festival, with Hayes’s 17-minute rendition of Bill Withers’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” serving as a showcase for his urgent, blues-bitten alto saxophone work.
