California Girl / Down To Earth
Eddie Floyd
Alabama-born soul singer Eddie Floyd found ideal songwriting partners in MGs members Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper and scored his biggest hits working with them. By the time the two albums reissued herein were made, Jones and Cropper were breaking away from the MGs and Stax Records, but such was their loyalty to their old friend that they continued to collaborate with Floyd. Recorded in 1969 and '70, the first contains the hits "Why Is the Wine Sweeter (On the Other Side)" and "California Girl," both co-written by Floyd and Jones. The second, produced in 1971 by Cropper and Floyd, is a bold experiment in soul-rock fusion quite unlike anything else in the vocalist's discography.
