Joe Farrell was born Joseph Carl Firrantello near Chicago in 1937 and died in Los Angeles in 1986. At 16, he switched from clarinet to tenor saxophone, the instrument on which he later became a fixture of both the New York and Los Angeles jazz scenes. Farrell was a heavily featured sideman with Maynard Ferguson, Jaki Byard, Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, Elvin Jones, George Russell, Horace Silver, Woody Herman, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea. In his final West Coast phase, he refined his preoccupation with modal playing and expanding his roomy sound. Sonic Text is one of his finest albums.
