Red Garland's trio provided the ideal setting for John Coltrane in the first phase of the saxophonist's recording career as a leader, and this February 1958 collection is the best of Trane with the RG3. Coltrane finds forums for his unparalled harmonic knowledge and lyrical passion in two 1945 classics associated with Tadd Dameron, who wrote "Good Bait" and arranged Billy Eckstine's "I Want to Talk About You" for the Eckstine band. Also included are the obscure pop song "You Say You Care," Fred Lacey's moving tribute to saxophonist Ernie Henry and a whirlwind tour of "Russian Lullaby" that led critic Ira Gitler to coin the phrase "sheets of sound" in reference to Coltrane's style. What emerges is a portrait of a jazz genius coming into his own.

with Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Arthur Taylor
