Throughout his half-century as one of jazz's most inspired and spontaneous voices, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz has brought an in-the-moment attitude to every playing situation he encountered. This philosophy makes his readings of historic material like the present program as vibrant and "new" as his more unprecedented projects. Konitz was looking back more than two decades on this occasion when he assembled a program that recalled his early apprenticeship with pianist/mentor Lennie Tristano (see OJC-186, Subconscious-Lee, for examples of their classic work together). The evolution in Konitz's style and that of pianist Sal Mosca, and the duet format heard on a majority of the tracks, ensured that Spirits was grounded in a sense of new discovery that still resonates.
