GENRE: JAZZ

The most liquid tenor saxophone tone in jazz belongs incontestably to Stan Getz, for decades regarded as a paramount exponent of his instrument by musicians, critics, and jazz adherents. These tracks represent some of his finest work from the period preceding his introduction of bossa nova to the American household, becoming a celebrity for the non-jazz audience in the process. The music presented here stems from Prestige sessions in 1949-50—shortly after Stan left the reed section of the Woody Herman Herd—and Fantasy recordings with vibist Cal Tjader eight years later when they worked an exciting engagement at San Francisco’s legendary Black Hawk Club.

*#1-2 originally released on The Brothers (Prestige 7022); #3 and 7 on Conception (Prestige 013); #4-6, 8-12 on Stan Getz Greatest Hits (Prestige 7337); and #13-19 released as Stan Getz with Cal Tjader (Fantasy 8348).
