"We were having fun," Steve Cropper said after hearing the 25 long-forgotten tracks that are finally seeing the light of day with this release. It shows-- in both the raw frat-party frenzy that marks many of the Mar-Keys tunes to the more refined blues sensibility of those by Booker T. & the MGs. Guitarist Cropper was a member of both bands, and they shared other personnel in the studio, particularly bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn (who replaced original MGs member Lewie Steinberg), drummer Al Jackson, Jr., and keyboardist Booker T. Jones. "Slidin'," a rare slide-guitar showcase for Cropper, is among this disc's many delights. And, in his well-researched booklet notes, compiler Alec Palao offers fascinating insights into studio techniques that helped give Stax Records one of the most distinctive sounds of the 1960s.
