These are the intermixed results of two different 1957 sessions featuring the plaintive, searing horn of the young Jackie McLean, once and future alto sax titan. On the grooving title blues and a bright-tempoed "What’s New" he is backed by Mal Waldron, Art Phipps, and Arthur Taylor. On "Millie’s Pad," a blues, and the minor-key "Disciples Love Affair," the tuba of Ray Draper plays an important role and Webster Young’s Miles-styled trumpet is also heard, backed by John Mayer, piano; Bill Salter, bass; and Larry Ritchie, drums. McLean is the only horn with the same rhythm section on the closing "Not So Strange Blues."
