Although Johnnie Taylor had been making records since 1953, his career didn’t explode until Stax Records hooked him up with Detroit producer Don Davis at the end of the following decade, giving the simultaneously elegant and earthy singer’s Memphis soul style a touch of Motown-like gloss. Super Taylor, the original 1974 Davis-produced album that yielded the hits “It’s September’ and “I’ve Been Born Again,” is now combined on compact disc with four additional selections from the same period, including a rare self-produced Taylor track entitled “Don’t You Fool with My Soul” on which he wails over a burning James Brown-inspired groove.
