When this trio recorded it represented the past, present, and future of Cannonball Adderley's rhythm section. Bassist Sam Jones was still providing his fellow Floridian a foundation in 1962, as he had in 1959 when Bobby Timmons interrupted his term with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to provide the grit and the hit tune "This Here" that ensured the Adderley enterprise's permanence; while drummer Roy McCurdy would go on to serve the saxophonist over the final decade of Cannonball's career. As a one-time studio unit, Timmons's trio plumbs the expected soul (the original "Another Live One" is ur-funk) and also explores several choice standards. In contrast, "God Bless the Child" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" are solo tracks that shed revealing light on the Bud Powell/church merger at the center of the Timmons conception.

with Sam Jones, Roy McCurdy
